YORK (WA)

1980 - YORK FLYING 50 21st September 1980Around the houses racing in Western Australia was resurrected in 1980 in the town of York, Peter Briggs and James Harwood who were the proprietors of the York Motor Museum wanted to start up a demonstration event of what Grand Prix racing for cars and motorcycles had been all about.
Because of a massive crash in 1955 at the famous Le-Mans circuit that killed in excess of eighty people and injured many more, motor racing was not so promotable and more of a liability to orginisers, this would see the shift of motorsport from public roads to dedicated race tracks.
This would not be the death of around the houses racing but made it very hard for events to continue.

At the time that the York Motor Museum opened and the 1980 event happened it was easy to see that the public wanted to see these classic race cars back on the streets racing, so the Vintage Sports Car Club was formed in 1984 to take over the promotion of the York event and expand racing to many other towns.
