1936 - SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CENTENARY INTERSTATE CAR RALLY
This car rally was organized as part of South Australia's Centenary events, It appeared to be a good move to attract interstate drivers rather than locals as some stayed on to participate or spectate at other events.
There were four starting points - Sydney - Melbourne - Perth and Broken Hill, There were almost one hundred and twenty entries.
The entries by state were New South Wales 48, Victoria 44, West Australia 10, Queensland 10, South Australia 5 and Tasmania 1.The rally started on the 19th of December 1936 and finished in Adelaide on the 22nd of December 1936.
As can be seen in the newspaper article opposite, Outright speed was not a factor in winning this rally, The cars would be judged on the enclosed points.
Mr Terry a Melbourne architect decided to drive to Perth to start as more points were awarded to competitors that competed over the longest course. |
