1946 - MOUNT AIRY SPEEDWAY 26th May 1946
Mount Airy Speedwayopened on the 26th of May 1946 with a program of Stock Car racing. Some beleive it was possibly the 1st purpose built Stock Car track within the North Carolina and Virginia regions after World War 2.
This 3/4 mile flat, oval dirt track was built on cropping land and into the side of a hill which provided a natural grandstand provided by nature. On Occasions other events including Midget and Motorcycle racing programs as well as horse racing events, and at least one visit by the Hell Drivers Tour.
Track Boss G W Golden pushed back approaches from Bill France and Nascar to allow them to sanction the venue. in responce France started to penalize drivers for racing at non Nascar tracks, this would lead to this tracks closure at the end of 1949.
