1947 - TAITA SPEEDWAY.
Taita Speedway opened soon after the end of World War 2, in 1946 in fact, it was a 1/4 mile dirt oval race track with long straights and tight corners.
The opening season was run during the day and was all Motorcycle racing. By the following season they were racing under lights. The racing attracted more and more fans as time went on.
The promotion team were riding the crest of a wave, they were holding many Solo Test Matches, promoting all the local teams as well as bringing visiting riders from overseas, like the USA and Australia.
However everthing crashed in 1956 when the owners of the land sold up to developers who deemed the land way to valuable for a speedway, and that's when speedway finished.
