SANDOWN RACECOURSE
Sandown Racecourse was first built as a horse racing facility, dating back to the 19th century, but closed during the 1930's.
Redevelopment work began just after the end of World War two as a sealed motor racing circuit, The raceway was built around the outside of the yet to be completed horse racing track, The raceway was completed and opened on the 11th of March 1962, with a two day meeting that ran into the 12th of March 1962.

1962 - SANDOWN PARK RACEWAY
The opening meeting for the new Sandown Park Circuit, The Sandown International Cup was held over the weekend of the 11th and 12th of March 1962, Featuring drivers such as Jack Brabham, Jim Clarke, Stirling Moss, Bruce McLaren and John Surtees.

Gerard Richards recalls: Lex who only had a few months to live, hurled the big Galaxie into the lead and after 22 laps had doubled the entire field, However after an hour the cars brakes failed completely and it crashed through the fence at Peter's corner and almost toppled down into the lake.

1972 - SANDOWN INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY. SANDOWN 250. 9th & 10th September 1972.Falcon GTHO Tri-fectorGTR-XU1 next 5This years Sandown 250 which was run of the two day doubled up as the second heat of the Australian Manufacturers Championship. The giant field of Group E Series Production cars turned in 130 grinding laps.
A most predicted the big GTHO Phase 3's had the power to smoke the opposition and fill the top three steps on the podium.
John Goss won the race, 2nd was Fred Gibson and 3rd Murray Carter. The next five places went to the GTR-XU1 of Tony Niovanni, Stewart McLeod. Bruce McPhee and the combination Dennis Gallagher and John Sloopman filling back to 8th.
