During the 1988 - 1989 season a USA speedcar team appeared at Claremont Speedway, That team was Kevin Olson and Jeff Gordon, Controversy surrounded the car with regards to engine size, but none of that mattered one a young man by the name of Tom Watson junior from Perth finished on top. 1989 - JOHN DAY AWARDS
Krikke snaps up top sprintcar honour
BUNBURY'S Ron Krikke has been Honoured as WA's finest sprintcar driver this season, Krikke may have failed to win a state or national title, but such was the success rate in other races, he was chosen ahead of Shane Murphey and Steven Arrigo to receive the John Day Award for sprintcars at the Burswood Resort on Saturday night.
Neville Lance won the speedcar section on a countback from national champion Graham Jones and Geoff Pilgrim after each had recorded 11 wins.
John Singleton another WA driver to enjoy success in the national, won the sedan award, with John Anderson the best formula 500 performer.
Glyn Taylor won the solo award, with Gary and Warren Joyce topping the sidecar category.
