1988 - GILGANDRA DISTRICT SPEEDWAY CLUB
The Gilgandra Club was officialy formed in 1988, but prior to that the towns flag was being flown by a racing team known as the Gilgandra fender benders, they were a small group of drivers that travelled around racing at many other tracks.
Once the club was formed the search was on for a race track site, with the aid of the local Shire a suitable site was found on the Newell Highway, 4km from Gilgandra.
With thehelp of local business and residents the club set about raising money to build the track.
By 1990 work had begun on the track with major earth works and track and spectator fencing errected.
the official opening of the Gilgandra Speedway track was on the 9th of June 1991, The meeting was opened by Cr George Downey and was a huge success with around 100 race cars attending.
Prior to 1964 track lighting was installed and improvements began on the catch fence that would be completed around 1996, the Gilgandra club has hosted many divisions and held State and National titals in its years of operation.
