1960's - BROOME SPEEDWAY
The Broome Hot Rod Club was first formed in the late sixties, Founding members were Jeff Klunder, Choco and Bubby Seaman, Bill Fisher, Dusty Miller, Dougy Pigram, Bill Darcy, Richard Stevens, Russell Lamke and Rod Dolan
The Shire Council and Broome Turf Club permitted the the club to build an oval circuit inside the horse racetrack, when the horse racing arrived car racing went into recess for two months, June - July being the peak period for for the turf club.
Local identity Jack Knox suggested the club build its own track with a saftey wall of drums and a spectator bank at the new rodeo grounds.
In the mid 1970's Woodside Burmah shifted its operations to Karratha and taking with it many competitors and forced the club into recess for a few years, With the building boom in the late seventee's interest once again saw movement at the track,
Several young builders Trevor Gladwin, Bruce Linto, Len Gilgren, Bill Chamberlain, Dave Newman, along with mechanics Jim and Dennis Andre, the Kiewiet boys got racing going again.
At this point motorcycle racing was introduced and a motorcross track was built on the infield, competitors included Norm and Dave Ferguson, Woggy Minshull and one time champion trials rider Snowy County, The late Michael McIntosh also competed at the track.
Committee changes at the horse riders club led to Gymkanas and Rodeos clashing with speedway meetings, The club then leased land from the Shire next to the Rodeo grounds in 1981, they now had their own track and conducted daylight meetings up until 1986 when lights were finally installed.
