During the late 1920's and early 1930's when motorcycle racing had become very popular throughout Australia, The Geelong Velodrome was home to a dirt track speedway, The Velodrome hosted the inaugural Victorian Solo Championship in 1926/27 and also a second held in 1927/28, Billy Pilgrim won both of these championships.

KARDINIA PARK AFTER THE SPEEDWAY CLOSED
1927 - The popularity of the Geelong Drome was definitely decided yesterday when a crowd of 14,000 assembled to witness the thills of motorcycling. And thrills there were. Outstanding amoungst all the star motorcyclists was "Bill Pilgrim. Not only did he win the challenge contest against Stewart but he rode magnificently all day.
