1947 - WHYALLA MOTORCYCLE RACING
The first speedway events in Whyalla took place in 1947 and attracted motor cycle riders from various clubs to compete on a circuit formed especially for the occasion, A permit to sell liquor at a booth was obtained and a large crowd attended.
During the meeting reports were emerging that several people had been shot while watching the racing.
The shooter was a competitor from Port Pirie who was sitting in the back of the family car, resting a foot injury when he bumped a loaded 303 rifle that was laying on the floor, The bullet blow a two inch hole through the car door, passed through an empty babies stroller, as well as three other cars, The bullet then hit Mr Fox a Deli owner from Whyalla in the back of the knee and out and into the chest of his wife and exiting near here spine, Both Mr and Mrs Fox survived the incident.
