1997 - STEVE JOHNSTONReigning European grass track champion, West Australian Steve Johnston, is well advanced with his preperations to defend his title in 1997, Johnston is presently competing in the Speedway Masters Series, following which he will return to Europe for a year of competition that will see him compete in more meeting than last season, "I raced at 85 meetings last year, but will be doing significantly more this year" said Johnston.The big news for me though is that i'll be switching from GM to Jawa machinary for the new season, "in 1997 the long and grass track world titles will be combined and conducted over a five round grand prix style championship. |

1997 - CLAREMONT SPEEDWAY. RON JOHNSON MEMORIAL CLASSIC. 5th December 1997.500cc Motorcycles the oldest division in speedway were in the spotlight at Perths Claremont Speedway with the running of the sixth Ron Johnson Memorial Classic.
Current State Champion Lee Redmond won the classic with a points score or 18 from Greg Bartlett on 12 points and Steve Johnson on 10 points.
The 3 Lap final was won by Steve Johnson.

1997 1998 - WEST AUSTRALIAN 500cc SOLO CHAMPIONSHIP 12th December 1997Claremont Speedway hosted the 1997 1998 West Australian 500cc Speedway Motorcycle Championship on Friday night the 12th of December 1997 to a packed stadium.
Riders such as Lee Redmond, Steve Johnson, Frank Smart and Greg Bartlett headlined the show along with many regular riders at the Showground.
The star studded nomination list included as Con would call him the master of going faster Glenn Doyle who is making a come back,
