But this was not to be when the record 10,000 strong crowd watched Rush break loose from the pack and surge to a handy lead all in the first lap.
It was in the first half lap of the grand final that seven cars managed to involve themselves in a chaotic mess of metal moving into the first corner, Bunbury's Colin Resta, caught the front end of a following car and five other cars were too close behind to avoid a pile up of cars.
Fortunately no-one was hurt during the fracas, track officials moved quickly to remove the damaged cars off the track ready for the restart of the final, The restart saw Gary Rush once again surge ahead of the field to open up a good lead on his nearest rival, Noel Bradford.
|
Bradford could not produce the pace and skill that Rush showed throughout the race, Rush reached speeds of up to 80 miles an hour in the main straights during the race.
George Tatnel followed Bradford over the line to gain third placing with New South Wales star Steve Brazier gaining forth.
Earlier in the night Bradford set a new track record of 2 min 37.2 secs
