1951 - SHELTON DRAGSTRIP.Drag Racing started at the Shelton Airport back in 1951, it was was quite informal and attracted a lot of interest. As the word got a lot of the Hot Rod set began to arrive for the race meeting's the day before an get on the grog and behave very badly, so much so that fights broke out and people were getting hurt. Some of these were under ages and that was a major problem, so the Police got involved. There response was close it down.

Initially that did happen but the Tacoma Timing Association who were organizing the racing got together with the Shelton Cival Air Patrol who had control over the site and the sherriff. drew up a lease with warning's that if the public got caught breaking any law's, the strip would be closed for ever.
