1978 - AUSTRALIAN SALOON CAR CHAMPIONSHIPClaremont Speedway hosted the 1977 1978 Australian Saloon Car Federation production car championship over the 10th and 11th of February 1978 to a packed showground.
Grenville Anderson from New South Wales would win the event from pole on a over watered track for the feature, second place went to Frank Ashmore from Victoria and third went to the home town boy Ben Ludlow from West Australia.

1978 - West Australian driver Leo Gommers qualified out of two for the feature.
1978 - West Australian flyer Phil Meyers qualified out of four on the feature grid.
1978 - A very quick 48 series Holden in the field of late model entry's.

The top six Victorian qualifying cars and drivers that made there way across the paddock for the National title were, Dennis Cockerill from Melbourne in a GTR-XU1 Torana number 27, Tony Nicholas from Euroa in a supercharged GTR-XU1 Torana number 50, Frank Ashmore from Ballarat in a SLR500 Torana number 42, Ian Clarkson from Melbourne in a EH Holden number 18, Jim English from Hamilton in a GTHO Falcon number 13 and Barry Hall from Euroa in a SLR5000 number 22.
