2015 FRED GIBBS SPECIAL
While at a swap meet in Wagga Wagga in 2011 Alan Jones came across the remains of the Fred Gibbs Special and paid $50.00 to take it home.
The Special was built by Fred in 1953, The car evolved from a 1951 Armstrong Siddeley coupe that had been rolled, Some on the day refered to the car as the Strong Arm Special.
During the period from 1953 through to 1957 Fred and his son Ray Gibbs both raced the car, competing at the Templestowe and Rob Roy tracks.
In 1957 Gibbs on-sold the Special to Bob Lewis and John Lawton who both raced the car at tracks such as, Templestowe, Rob Roy, Hepburn Springs, Mount Martha and Fishermans Bend.
By 1958 the ownership had once again changed hands, Geoff Burton brought the car and was racing it along with two other drivers in JN Hough and Gordon Frohling, The Special was raced at many circuit's with these drivers up until 1961, such as Hume Weir, Barjarg, Undera, Tarrawingee, Bright, Chiltern and Wahgunyah as well as others.
In 1961 Burton sold the car, The FGS appears to have been repainted white with red highlights, and ended up on a speedway track down towards Victoria's, Brisbane Rangers area.
The original FGS engine and gearbox was removed and refitted to other race cars, Then later transferred to a Armstrong Siddeley Saffire, A Chevrolet flat six was fitted to the special.
Alan is restoring the Fred Gibbs Special and has tracked down a lot of information, but would still like to hear from anyone that has information on the car and drivers, especialy after the car left Bright Victoria.

2014 WA LINDSAY GROVER SUPER SEDANLindsay's corvette has escaped the claws of the scrap dealers thanks to a retired speedway racer by the name of Gary Smith a keen member of West Coast Vintage & Classic Speedway.
Gary found the Corvette lying dormant on a vacant block in the Mandurah area, Enquiries were made and the owner was Craig Agnew, a relation to Lindsay who had previously raced the car after Lindsay, The car was upturned and missing the engine, also the body work was damaged and the framework was starting to rust.
Gary brought the car and immediately began to rebuild the Corvette with the intension of racing the car, Initially he fitted a 245 Hemi engine to the finished car, but later upgraded to the 350ci Power plant that it has today.

2014 WA BILL BROWN TANDAM JAWA SIDECARAt the age of 84 Bill Brown is restoring a sidecar outfit that he built many years ago, Any one with any knowledge of early sidecar racing in West Australia would remember his outfits, Early on Bill built an outfit powered by twin JAP engines this machine was ridden to many victories by firstly Harry Taylor, who later rode a Triumph powered machine that Bill built, When Harry moved into car racing Grahame Harris began riding for Bill, Prior to riding Grahame was Harry's swinger. Then came the Twin engine Jawa machine, ridden by once again Grahame Harris. It seems that Bill had a strong fascination for twin engine outfits.
Grahame Harris & Johnny Watkins Triumph |
Harry Taylor Grahame Harris Twin JAPHarry Taylor and Graham Harris both superstars riding for Bill Brown, super constructor and tuner, both regular backmarkers on the big Claremont Showground Speedway. |
Ralphy taylor dropped in on Billy to see how he was going, and the progress on the outfit, and as you can see its complete apart from the restoration of the tank.

Doug James restored this back in 2004, It ran a 500cc Norton engine in it which I purchased from Bill Richards and it had an old top and bottom mounted BSA gearbox, I was pleased with the end result, it came up really good, I won the club trophy for the most original tq several times at the WA Classic Speedway Association Gala Day events.
Former sidecar star Lew McDonald bought the car off me just prior to moving from our Serpentine property to Mandurah where we are now, and guess what Lew won the peoples choice trophy the first time that he put the car on show.
