1916 - FUNKS SPEEDWAY
Funks Speedway or Winchester Speedway as it is now known was built in a corn field by Frank Funk in 1914, with the track opening in 1916.
As the owner and the operator Funk pursued a two pronged strategy to attract spectators. Firstly he recognized the attendance numbers went up as the clay banks were raised higher and higher reaching twenty five foot by 1932 and the turns were said to be banked at forty five degrees by 1948.
In 1932 the track could seat six thousand in the grand stands with the grounds accommodating up to fourteen thousand.
