1987 - CLAREMONT SPEEDWAY.   Australian Speedcar Championship.   (night 1)   9th January 1987.

Claremont Speedway hosted the 1986/1987 Australian Speedcar Championship.
Tom Watson from Western Australia won the title from Gary Dillon and John Sears both from South Australia.
Queensland driver Eric Mitchell driving a Volkwagon powered car owned by John Mulcahey was air freighted in especially for the Championship.

Tommy Knudsen Wins King of Claremont.

Twenty five year old Tommy Knudsen was crowned the Sunday Times King of Claremont Speedway on January 16, The "Dashing Dane" joined such imortal names such as Ivan Mauger, Michael Lee, Bernt Persson and the late great Kenny Carter on the coveted trophy.
Fourteen riders contested the series which was held over 8 heats each of 7 riders, plus two semis and a final. Following the heats, local ace Mick "The Master McKeon had scored 26 points (two firsts and two seconds) and led resident international star Simon Cross by a solitary point, Then come Glyn Taylor and Rick Miller (USA) both on 22 points with Knudsen and Kelvin Tatum
(England) on 21 points apiece. Knudsen downed McKeon and Peter Ravn {Denmark) in the first semi, while home track hero Taylor scored over Cross and Glen Doyle (WA) in the all up final which saw Knudsen shoot away from the tapes clear of cross with McKeon getting by Taylor for third on the bell lap.
