1956 - McCORMICK FIELD RACEWAY
Lost Dirt Tracks facebook feature
This facility was and is a baseball field that was built in the mid 1920's to house the minor league baseball team Ashfield Tourists. The demise of the tri state league in 1955 meant that the baseball team wasn't playing.
The owners needed to find ways to keep the stadium afloat. One of those was motorsport, They paved a 1/4 mile track around the baseball diamond and began racing in 1956. Mostly Stock Cars. Immediately NASCAR sanctioned most of the racing and held both Stock Car and Midget races, They held a number of NASCAR Convertable races. In 1958 they received their first and only NASCAR Grands Nationals race. That event was won by Jim Paschal who beat out eighteen other drivers.
The racing was finished up during 1959. Baseball was due to return to the stadium and an overhaul of the facility was made to bring baseball back.
