1965 - COLLIE MUNGALLUP HOT ROD TRACKThe Mungallup Hot Rod track opened on the 24th of October 1965, The track was built in a gravel pit on the Mungallup road on the outskirts of Collie, the track was renound for its uphill downhill layout with very long straight and a sharpe turn two, the pits were located on the infield and the spectator area and car park overlooked the race track.
The track came about when the Collie Police and Citizens Youth Club decided to build the track to keep the local kids in line, The race meetings were quite succesful and very well promoted and received, This arrangement continued until such time as the Collie Racing Drivers Association was formed, The new group sub-leased the property and continued the hold there race meeting, The RDA volunteer's ran the venue up until 1971 when they closed the track as they had been constructing the current venue on the Williams road. |

Garnett Lane recalls: During the sixtee's I had brought a Supermod from a Farmer in the Moora district who had to give up racing because of a bad back, The car ran a Ford sidevalve V8 engine, I paid 250 quid for the car (a lot of money in those days)
The first time I raced the car was at Collie, at the start of the day one official took a look at the car and thought it looked good enough to put me on a 100 yard handicap, I soon over came any thoughts of never raced the car and went on to win all 4 races, by the time the butchers picnic had come up my handicap was 250 yards, this race I finished one wheel behind bloody Ron Shultz, what a day.

500 Spectators At Hot Rod Races
Searing heat dulled the enthusiasm of many people for Hot Rod racing, but nevertheless about 500 attended the Collie Youth Club's second meeting at its new track.
Because of the heat, many competitors from Perth did not make the trip which resulted in a reduced program - matched by the club with a reduction in charges.Despite this it was a day of thrills and spills with several roll- overs by cars and accidents among motorcycles, No one was injured.ROLL OVERGeorge Lee of Bunbury, driving a Jaguar had an eventful day.He entered the bottom turn just behind Laurie White of Perth who lost control and went into a spin. To avoid a collision Lee swerved sharply to the right, lost control turned end over end, and landed upside down six feet over the embankment. He worked hard to repair his car and then went for a practice run.Entering the bottom turn again his accelerator jammed cutting off the power he needed for a controlled drift and Lee overturned again. |
His car was badly bent but can be repaired.Lee himself, was not injured, demonstrating the value of the safety measures used.Local drivers who suffered misfortune were Des Kirk, who broke an axel and Chris Ainsworth, who ruined a big end.WINNERThe aggregate winner in the hot-rods was Laurie White, of Perth. A Collie team comprising Crowe, Hunter, and Fleay was second and Bob Smith of Collie was third.Hot-rod racing is becoming very popular in Collie and at least 16 cars are under construction. The club has decided that future summer meetings, which it is hoped will be fortnightly, will be held in the twilight to avoid the heat. Most local hot-rodders are expected to attend the big meeting at Bunbury on January 2. |

1968 - JUNIOR SEDAN
The subject of when and where Junior Speedway started in Western Australia. Was it Wattle Grove Speedway, Forrestfield Speedway, or was it at the Collie Mungallup track. Seems both the Collie and Wattle Grove clubs did kick off in 1968. The Wattle Grove RDA started off joining up Junior drives but they were racing Stock Cars that there Mums or Dad's raced.
Meanwhile here at the Mungallup track, there Junior's who also started up in 1968 went in another direction. The Collie RDA chose to go down the path of full on junior cars, All RAC 10hp and under, most with small side valve engines. Ford Prefects Austins Hillmans and even a Renault.
Some of the drivers of this period were. Wayne Moran, Frank Maloney, Russell Millman, Gordon Suggett, David Snell, M Hopcraft and I Larson both from the Manjimup club.
As far as Forrestfield went they obtained a copy of the Collie RDA's rules and introduced there juniors about 1970, The Wattle Grove Club would also adopt these rules about the same time, bringing all the clubs into line.
