1936 - NORSEMAN OVAL SPEEDWAY HOSPITAL QUEEN FUND RAISING MEETING 3rd October 1936
West Coast Speedway News Ghost Tracks feature
The public of Norseman turned up in full force to witness the carnival run by the Cycle and Motorcycle Clubs last Sunday. Proceeds were in aid of Miss Dorothy Mayberry's Hospital Queen candedature, and the wheelmen were no doubt pleased with the financial result of their worthy efforts.
Streamer decorated cars, motor cycles and cycles formed a procession from the town to the oval and imparted a gala atmosphere to the proceedings.
The motor cyclists gave the crowd quite a thrill in their efforts to nogotiate the gravel track at high speed.
A well built speedway in Norseman would be a big draw to the public, as there can be no doubt as to the thrill of Motor Bike racing. The Gare v Scott race was to be one: of the main eventsof the day, but misfortune overtook the riders in the first lap, when comming round the turn near the goal posts, Scotts machine skidded and the rider did a flying trapeze act over the handle bars. Sencing a mishap, Gare attempted to turn, but skidded and he also "flew through the air" Gare was unhurt but Scott sustained a broken rib.
Keen cycling events were a feature of the day's sport and after tieing with Fuller (scratch) on points, Waters (65 yards) won the deciding face for the cup donated by Mr.D.Thomas.
Mr H Warne handled the starters gun and officials included Messrs. J.J.Fuller, "S Kerr" and T Sullivan. The prize for the best decorated car was won by K Bullen, best decorated motor cycle H Morgan and best decorated cycle, Joyce Cornelius.
