1960 - SAVANNAH SPEEDWAY.
Savannah Speedway debut in 1962 as a 1/2 mile dirt oval track, It actually opened in late 1960 as a 1/4-mile dirt oval. For some reason, they paved it for 1961 and made it D-Shaped, Both years they ran Micro Midgets - a class of car that resembled a Midget but were smaller and used motorcycle engines as well as generally chain drive. The track was expanded to a 1/2-mile for 1962, The track was paved and ran un-successfuly for years. In a fit of desperation, the pavement was pulled up in 1981 and dirt racing resumed but it closed in june of that year never to run again. The venue was owned by MC Anderson for many years, MC was a Nascar team owner, The track hosted ten Nascar Grand National events, with Richard Petty winning two of those.
