1962 - KEMBLA GRANGE SPEEDWAY.
|
Kembla Grange Speedways construction started in 1962 and opened on the 26th of August 1962 on a 31 acre site ajoining the local horse racing track, the track was designed by a notable solo rider of the thirtee's in Cobden Jones.
Cobden in fact was based in England with the Royal Australian Airforce for a time and studied the Wembley Stadium, perhaps this is why Kembla Grange is often refered to as the Wembley of the south.

In 1967 the Wollongong Hot Rod Club was formed and by 1979 the venues name had been changed to Wollongong City Speedway, the speedway would close on the 3rd of June 1983.
