1964 - DEVONPORT SHOWGROUNDS SPEEDWAYThe start of speedway racing in Tasmania has been accredited to Bill Haycock of Devonport.
The track was not a traditional speedway but more a grass track concept, racing was around hay bales set out on the inner arena, The racing was organised by the three quarter Speedcar Club, meetings were held on a Sunday afternoon, Stock Car racing was introduced during the 1967- 1968 season.
The sport has never looked back since those early days of 3/4 Speedcars racing around a hay bale lined showground circuit.
|
From those early days came a group of Speedcar drivers that set their hearts on building their own speedway at Latrobe and in 1965 their dream came to fruition, and by 1965 the Showgrounds was no longer used for speedway.
