1971 - PENLEE SPEEDWAY. 1.
historicspeedway.co.nz has reported that there have been two speedway tracks built that both operated under the name of Penlee Speedway, each on farms owned by the Cartmell family, near Masterton.
The first of the track's opened in November of 1971 and was located on the family farm, under the shadow of Mount Holdsworth. The track was a 325 yard dirt oval speedway that was built for motorcycle racing only. The spectator count for that first meeting was 2,500.
The local rider's soon became quite competitive and quickly became known as the Penlee Pirates.
Sadly the family sold the farm to a buyer that had no interest in a speedway on his property, the track closed and the two young brother's in the family went off and bought there own farms. The date of the closure is unknown.
