1981 - BATHURST MOUNT PANORAMA. JAMES HARDIE 1000. 4th October 1981.Dick Smashed it for to winThe race distance had to be shortened this due to a major crash caused when a large rock rolled down a bank and onto the road. Dick Johnson while leading was the first car to arrive smashing into the rock and riding the steel road barrier and crashing back onto the track, partially blocking the following traffic. Officials the decided to declare the race and award the finishing locations as per the previous racing lap. this gave the win to Johnson and John French in the wrecked XD Falcon, followed by Bob Morris and John Fitzpatric also in an XD Falcon, with Allan Moffat and

Derek Bell third in the Mazda RX7 Rotary. Such was the sadness that the fan's of motorsport in Australia felt for Dick that money for the Queensland based team started pouring in, for the Ford team to get back out there.
The Gulson - Coombs entry in the great race was in the form of a VC Holden Commodore, They started the race but failed to record a finish in the event.
