1922 - THEBARTON OVAL SPEEDWAY
The venue hosted motorcycle speedway racing from 1922 and ended in 1928, Being that speedway started at Thebarton Oval in 1922 prior to the well documented claims that fully promoted speedway started in Australia in December of 1923 at West Maitland Oval, One would assume that there first meetings may have been simple low key grass track events.
The sports ground provided a 550 yard dirt speedway track around the perimeter of the oval, The racing events were held under lights, Very basic lighting gave just enough lighting for the riders to put on the show.
Thebarton Oval Speedway will be allways known as one of South Australia's pioneer tracks.
