1948 - JIMMY McMAHONJimmy McMahon was born in the suburb of Greenacre, Bankstown, Sydney, Later moving to the Bondi region.
Jimmy had already gained fame through racing motorcycles, before he moved into speedcar racing (midgets) as they are known as in America.
He was very much a hands on racer and built his own equipment.
In 1947 after Jimmy had won the 1940 / 1941 New South Wales Speedcar Championship, he and fellow racer Dinny Patterson decided to move to America and they both continued to race. Dinny was killed that same year when he crashed.
By 1948 Jimmy had purchased a new Kurtis kit car to which he fitted his freshly built V8-60 engine.
This would be the car that Jimmy would loose his life in, while leading a race at the Carpinteria Thunderdome on the 11th of July 1948.
