LAKE PERKOLILLI (WA)

1914 - LAKE PERKOLILLIReports of Motor Picnic and Sports meetings at Lake Perkolilli go back as far as 1914.
Racing events were held for Motorcycles, Sidecars and Motor Cars.
Lake Perkolilli was known throughout the nineteen twenty's and the ninteen thirty's as one of the best natural race tracks surface's in the world, over its life thousand's of motor racing enthusiasts raced around the two mile circuit that was a combination of teracotta clay and salt, A Grand Prix version of the circuit was also used by adding in two chicanes with sandbags.

1923 - THE ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB
Lake Perkolilli had been used for some time by the Goldfields Motorcycle Club for speed events , so in 1923 it was just a progression when the RAC and the motorcycle club organised there first speed weekend, the two mile circuit was surveyed and laid out using round bore casings for the round high speed circuit and sandbags used to mark out the smaller Grand Prix track with its chicanes, racing was in a clockwise direction, situated 35 miles north east of Kalgoorlie near Kanowna just off the Yarri Road, racing would continue at the lake up until 1937 every year except for 1932 and 1933.

1923 - OSSIE CRANSTON
Ossie had allready made a name for himshelf in motorsport on the grass tracks at Claremont Speedway, because of an injury he changed to car racing, his first meeting was at Lake Perkolilli in a model t Ford called Hezza Henrey, unfortunately an engine failure would end his day.
It would be much later in 1927 that Ossie would be able to reach speeds up to sixtey eight miles per hour, this car would later be sold and a new A model Ford would be built.

1936 - ALAN TOMLINSON
Was a young man who first raced at the age of 18 when he joined the WA Sporting Car Club. he would win a stock car handicap race in his Ford V8 car at Lake Perkollili in 1936.
Alan's first attempt at a Grand Prix was in 1937 at Albany, due to a minor crash Alan did not finish the event, allthough he did go on to win two other events Albany and Bunbury shortley after.
Later Alan at the age of 23 would win the Australian Grand Prix at Lobethal in South Australia in 1939.
In 1940 Alan suffered masive injuries after crashing his car in South Australia, he would spend 5 months in hospital.
Alan later returned to Perth with the intension of of rebuilding the car but with the outbreak of World War 2, car racing would cease, Alan dedicated the rest of his life to the WASCC and the Vintage Sports Car Club of WA, Allan Tomlinson died at the age of 95.
