1903 - AUTOMOBILE RACING.
The first Automobile races were held on the Milwaukee Mile dirt oval in 1903, Chicago driver William Jones won a five lap speed contest on the day, thus setting a lap record of seventy two seconds at 50 mph.
The track surface was not ideal for cars during those initial years as horse racing was still being held at the venue, as time passed the track received upgrades and by 1929 the wooden picket fence around the track had been replaced by a concrete barrier.
