Teething Troubles for Townsville's Savanna quarter
The October 12 Drag meet at Savanna Drag Strip was a crutial event for the Townsville drag racing fraternity, Competition was at a low ebb and this was accentuated by the absence of the Chrondek timing equipment, Despite this, the meeting was all important as it virtualy determined the future course of drag racing in the North.
The previous September 14 meet had been the best yet as far as competition went, but the worst for attendance figures.
During the week following, there were numerous rumours spreading that the strip would close down because of the lack of appart commercial profitability to the owners, a last ditch stand was made the local Challengers club to improve the promotion of the strip.
Their efforts were dogged by bad luck but what advertising was done improved attendance by 25 percent, the lowering of the admission charge to $1 also improved matters, but without any Leland Kolbs to look at, no-body at this stage appears interested enough to come to the drags.
Local participation for the October 12 meeting however was excelent, unfortunatly with the nationals only one week away, no Brisbane competitors were prepared to come so far north.
Local dragstar hero Reece Davies left his rail in the pits for the day rather than risk a breakdown, Reece's record breaking 430 Lincoln A/D rail was set up and ready for the nationals and he was all prepared to trailer it to Sydney the following day.
