1968 - PORT HEDLAND HOT ROD TRACK
Prior to the building of Pippingarra Speedway. Hot Rod racing was held on a very crude undulating tack next to were the current track is today. This early track was located on Pippingarra Station, which was owned by the Richardson family.
The Port Hedland Hot Rod track was formed by two local traffic inspectors, Roy Mitchell and Kevin Whiteford in 1968 with a D7 bulldozer and a 950 Cat loader loaned to them by Bill Francis who was the manager of Bell Bros at the time.
This track only operated for a short period, up until the early months of 1970 when a cyclone flooded the track and destroyed its.

1970 - PIPPINGARRA SPEEDWAY
In 1968 it was decided that a new speedway was to be built, A flatter location next to the original track was chosen and the owner John Richardson decided to release that parcell of land back to the Department of lands, so it could be leased to the club as crown land
The new 600 metre track was built with equipment from a contracting company that was working for Mount Newman Mining at the time.

1971 - DAVE MACPHERSONDave 1st got involved in speedway back in the wild west days in the town of Port Hedland, Conditions were harsh and men were men. This was an era when the racing was hard and fast and tempers would ofter boil over, Some of these drivers like Dave earnt a reputation for sorting out the problem behind the water truck like real men.
Daves first car he built and raced was a blue 48 series Holden.
|
Dave firmly beleived that the 48 series Holden was the way to go and he continued to develop a 2nd version of the car, this was the start of the red car and also the formation of the Srub Basher racing team that Dave headed up from his home, known as the Moore Street Speed Shop.

THE MOORE STREET SPEED SHOP SCRUB BASHERS TEAM
The Scrub Bashers team was well known and feared throughout the North West as the men to beat, This very low budget set up was based out of a residential address in Port Hedland. The members of this team took great pride in the fact that they all operated out of the Moore Street Speed Shop.
