Bill Pearson recalls: This BMC Austin 1800 finished second outright, it would have won the event, except Hopkirk stopped to render assistance to the leading Frenchmen in their Citroen who had a head on smash with a spectotor car just after the last competitive section near Hindmarsh Station.
I was filming the event just one kilometre away for Fox Movietone News, and oblvious to it.

Gerry Bashford recalls: during the recent London to Sydney re-runs we had the privilege of speaking with the passenger from the mini. The driver passed away a few years ago in 2019. I also spoke at length with Paddy Hopkirk about it, he was the first car on the scene and actually gave up his chance of inheriting the lead by going back to a spectator point to get assistance. It was not a competitive stage and was open to traffic, this was a public dirt road.
