1996 - LATE MODEL SEDANS THE INCEPTION WA
Prior to Late Model Sedans starting in West Australia Allan Nylander built 2 cars and hit the promotion trail, He took these cars to country tracks and offered drives to many of the locals, It was an uphill battle for the new car concept as the Australian Saloon Car Federation wanted nothing to do with this concept, Allan however never gave up and pushed on, Although the Australian body did not support late models many West Australian officials and administrators opted to support the new division as well as Super Sedans, A small group of tracks and promoters saw the merits in this concept and programmed the Late Models on a regular basis.
During there debut season the Late Models only competed at WA country tracks (The first ever Australian Late Model feature was held at Geraldton Speedway)
During the second season deals were being done with the larger venues such as Claremont and Bunbury, USA driver Ray Godsey was brought to Perth several meetings.
|
Initially the cars were based on the previous Grand National, Converted Australian built Super Sedan but left hand drive and steel small block engines, were givern a phase out period of about three years, Unlike the true USA version of the car the Australian car ran a
32 inch right rear tyre as opposed to the 29 inch. The drivers mainly came from the very strong Super Sedan divison, Names such as Alan Nylander, John Cardy, Ben and Brad Ludlow, Rob McGregor,
The West Australian Championship was not introduced until the second year, this was won by Alan Nylander, By the third year the cars specifications had been brought into line
|
With the American Book and many more drivers were jumping into late models, Ivor Ludwick and Brad Blake had made the swap, Blake driving for Alan Nylander with a lot of success, John Cardy stepped out of his seat to allow a young Amcar driver in Jay Cardy to take over the driving.
