Bunbury City Speedway Looses Five Star Rating
This was the accident that led to Bunbury Speedway loosing it 5 star track grading with Speedway Australia, The decission to act was not in the interest of safety as the following sprintcar race meeting was allowed to run without replacing the concrete fence or the steel uprights and cables, the only repair required was to repair the mesh debris screen.
The Priolo car left the track at the end of the main straight heading into turn one, sprintcar do torn in at over 100mph at this point and as you can see apart from the damaged mesh the catch fence worked to perfection and the driver was unhurt.
The catch fence at Bunbury Speedway was years ahead of its time when it was built during the 1980's, It is designed to absorb the impact of the cars, cusion the impact and return the car to the racetrack with its suspension type construction, reducing the risk factor to the drivers.
The end result of this down grading is, Bunbury Speedway can no longer run any open wheel cars until the concrete fence, the steel uprights, the cables and the debris mesh has all been replaced, The cost of the masive project is around $1.5 million dollars, plus many volunteer hours from the club members.
The new replacement fence that work will start on next year, subject to the success of a government grant that been applied for. The replacement catch fence is not a suspension type but ridged and un-forgiving, time will only tell as to weather injuries increase to driver that manage to find themselves crashing into catch fence at high speed, remembering as time passes, cars improve, speeds increase and crashes are harder.
