1948 - WAIAU SPEEDWAYWaiau Speedway opened around 1948 as a 1/4 mile dirt oval speedway at Pearl City, Waiau was the first track in Hawaii to run Jalopy / Stock Cars, these began in 1949.
The speedway only lasted to 1950, it was on July 4 of that year that a three year old girl Lela Lee Willis would be killed and many others injured after one of the drivers competing lost control and crashed there car into the spectators. As a result of the accident many drivers started to withdraw there support for the venue over safety concerns. The speedway still continued to battle on with the Oahu Stock Car Racing Association, headed up by Harry Yamanaka a Tire Saleman working with

tracks promoters in an attempt to regulate the sport and introduce better safety. But it would become a case of too little too late as in 1951 the Waiau Speedway went out of business.
The very next year the Hawaiian Racing Promoters, Limited, headed up by Al Montgomery, introduced Stock Car racing on a 1/4 mile dirt oval track within the Honolulu Stadium
