1941 - ARMSCAMP SPEEDWAY
From 1941 through to 1967 Armscamp Speedway hosted a variety of races on the quarter-mile asphalt oval track as well as the one-eight mile infield track.
The track was built by Joe Armstrong and Frank Scampmorte of Anderson, The opening meeting was held on the 4th of July 1941.
Racing ceased at the venue in 1943 and 1944 because of World War 2, but reopened the following year when the Office of Defence Transportation permitted a relaxation of war time travel restrictions.
Huston Bunby was killed on the 4th of September 1946 while competing at Armscamp, The first of several drivers to loose their lives there, Two weeks later a fire broke out in the grand-stands causing about $20,000 in damage.
