New Wheels Club Season Opens
Sunday: April 29 saw the opening of the speedway season on the new track at Tom Price. A fine day's racing in all three classes - stock - modified stock and super stock - was highlighted by car [66], being driven to a victory in every event it entered by last year's champions Nait Ruck and Trevor Clarke.
Best for the ladies was June Clarke driving the flying Holden [66] The new track appeared to be quite a handfull for many drivers with much spinning and sliding resulting in some good displays of avasive driving. The three Holdens driven by the Morris's performed well returning ten places out of twelve races. Ken Brown and Niel Weise displayed their skills of last year in their new stock Falcon with two easy wins and two places in their four events. The keen competition and the efficient - work of the officials provided an excellent five hours entertainment for the many spectators. The new track record for the near half - mile track now stands at 25 seconds, held by car [66] and car number "one half" driven by Nicholls recorded the first roll over for the season.

The track preperation was hampered by heavy rains that washed away the prepared track just a week prior to the meeting, the allready tired volunteers worked flat strap to repair the track in time with Hamersley Iron lending machinary as well as transporting by train some much needed beach sand for the coastal town of Dampier. the West Pilbara Shire also loaned the club a grader.
