Deaths During the Ampol Trial
Detective Sargeant Charles Edward Paulin 46 of Hutton street Thornbury Victoria an Mike Dillon 35 of Dolphin street Googee both died in hospital as the result of accidents while competing in the Ampol Trial.
Sgt Paulin died in Maryborough Hospital of a fractured pelvis and internal injuries sustained when a Holden driven by Len Aylward from Victoria skidded in road side gravel and overturned.
Dillon died in Taree Hospital of a fracture at the base of the scull, received when a Holden driven by Len Ellick of Maroubra overturned 6 miles from Wingham.
Both men were navigators and both were thrown from the cars they were in.

1970 - AMPOL TRIAL
The 1970 event, unlike the previous that ran up and down the east coast, started in Alice Springs NT and traveled a distance of 10,200 kilometres finishing in Sydney.
The records show that two teams were awarded the win of the trial, Jean-Claude Ogler and Lucette Ogler in a Citroen DS21, also Edgar Herrmann and Hans Schuller in a Datsun 1600 SSS.
