LAURIE MATHEWS MEMORIALWest Australian speedcar driver Laurie Mathews was tragically killed on tuesday the 19th of January 1988, in a truck road accident while on his way to Sydney to compete in the Australian Speedcar Championship.
A veteran of the world of Speedcar racing, Laurie at the time was the longest serving Speedcar competitor in West Australia.
Laurie started racing in 1959 at the age of 16, He drove some very good cars in those early years, this was the period when the grey motor Holden engine was very popular.
Laurie's first feature win was on the 4th of March in 1960 at Claremont Speedway, laurie went on to win his first West Australian Championship on the 15th of March 1963 at Claremont Speedway.
Laurie Mathews was a house hold name through his racing days enjoying a lot of success, Just prior to his premature death

Laurie had just racked up his 21st Claremont Speedway Speedcar feature win, Laurie Mathews has been a name synonymous with Speedcar racing in Australia, for many years, The Australian Speedway fraternity will alway's hold Laurie Mathews in the highest esteem.
