Tallem Bend: South Australia.
RIVER BEND RACEWAY PARK.
The Drag Racing World in South Australia and all of our visiting friends are currently blessed with possibly the best Drag Racing venue in Australia,at the moment, But it hasn't always been that good.
Our re-search shows that single lane timed event's started off in the 1960's at what was refered to as the Gawler Belt. An end to this came about when the Brooksfield Drag Strip opened at Two Wells. The cars raced side by side here but on two single strips.
1979 - RIVER BEND DRAGWAY.
By 1979 a Adelaide business man by the name of Roley Leahy decided to build a Dragstrip that would rival any other in Australia, and so he did, now it has been reported that Roley brought a business partner in on the deal, a Terry O'Toole.
The strip was the standard 1/4 mile, sealed, with concreat at the starting area with a shallow spoon drain across the track to wet the tyres for the burnout's, the rest of the strip was ashphalt.
Five race meeting's were programmed in 1979, with three of them were either cancelled because of rain or excessive winds, or both.
