Reports indicate the the 1/2 mile dirt oval speedway held it first race meeting at the fairgrounds on the 26th October 1949. This was a Stock Car event and was won by Buddy Keith.

C.. sped to victory yesterday in a Grand National 100 mile late model stock race to take the $1,000 top prize money.Petty took the lead on the 114th lap of the 200 lap race over the Louisiana State Fairgrounds sun baked track and toured the distance in one hour. 32 minutes and 52 seconds.Herb Thomas of Olive. N. C. driving the pole car was leading when Petty took over. Thomas eventually finished third behind Dick Rathman of Los Angeles.Rathman won $700 for second place and Thomas received $500 of the $4,300 total purse for his third place finish, fourth place went to Tim Flock and fifth, Buck Baker.The race was sanctioned by the National Assn. of Stock Car Auto Racing [NASCAR] |
