1940's - WINTERPORT AIRFIELD.
The American Military set about building the Winteport World War 2 Military Airbase during the 1940's.
After the war and some time in the 1950's the name of the Airfield was changed to the Fernald Field in honour of Roy L Fernald, a noted serviceman who had operated from the base.
As America was winding down its many military bases after the war, this base was handed over to the town of Winterport.
